Skillfully Welding Your Car
To repair auto body and frame damage, auto welding is used as well as plasma arc cutting. This process of fusing one material with another through the application of energy, such as heat. When a skilled technician does it correctly, it produces a strong and high quality weld.
Most structural and cosmetic panels are joined together by a welding process. There are several types of auto welding techniques. Below we explain a few of the methods our leading tech might use to repair your vehicle’s collision damage.
Auto Welding Processes
Brazing
The process in which a brass filler rod is used to join metal together is called Brazing.
Electric Arc Welding – Spot Welding
The technique in which a hot arc is formed between the base metal and the filler wire is called arc welding or spot welding. The arc melts the base metal and the filler wire, creating the weld.
Fusion Welding
This process pieces of metal are heated to the melting point, jointed together with a filler rod, and allowed to cool.
MIG Welding
Metal inert gas (MIG) welding uses a welding wire that is fed automatically at a constant speed as an electrode. There are a few basic welding techniques employed with MIG equipment for example tack weld, continuous weld, plug weld, spot weld, and stitch weld.
Pressure Welding
This method pieces of metal are heated to a softened state, pressure is applied, and the metal pieces are joined together.
Soldering
Solder is used primarily as a filler. Soldering is a slow, difficult process, which requires a great deal of skill.
